Commonwealth Partners with Team for Detroit’s Corktown Developments
Detroit, MI – In the heart of Detroit lies Corktown, one of the city’s oldest established neighborhoods and a nationally designated historical district. The area has recently gained attention through its leveraging of public and private investments to support new affordable housing, job growth, infrastructure, and expanded parks by utilizing a “transformation plan,” which has become the catalyst for residents, nonprofits, and developers to come together and create the Greater Corktown Neighborhood Framework Area Plan.
Commonwealth Heritage Group, Inc. (Commonwealth) served as historians and consultants to the team lead by Perkins & Will, who were, in turn, contracted to the Detroit Economic Growth Association. The team was tasked with preparing a framework for the Corktown area, including both the historic district south of I-94 and the North Corktown neighborhood north of the expressway. By partnering with the Perkins & Will team, the City of Detroit, its residents, and investors gain input from a variety of specialized planning professionals to support and promote the area’s unique character, cultural heritage, and integrity.
